How to Rehome Your Pet

Surrendering a pet to Irving Animal Services should be a last resort. IAS staff works tirelessly to find positive outcomes but cannot always guarantee that an animal will be adopted. Animals may be adopted, transferred to rescue or other shelter partners, or potentially euthanized.

Sometimes pet owners find themselves in a position where they may need to rehome a pet. If a pet must be rehomed, pet owners should explore all options before bringing a pet to the shelter.

Rehoming Options

Rehoming sites such as Rehome offers a simple, reliable and free option for pet owners to find a new home for their pet.


How does Rehome work?

  1. Create an online pet profile through Rehome. This profile will be able to be seen by millions of pet adopters
  2. Review applications and the Rehome team will help owners select the best pet adopter matches.
  3. Meet adopters with Rehome's guidance for a safe and pressure-free meeting.
  4. Finalize the adoption with Rehome's adoption contract to protect the transfer of your pet ownership.

Irving Residents Only

Irving residents who must surrender a pet can make an Owner Surrender Appointment.


Call the Irving Animal Care Campus at (927) 721-2256 to make the owner surrender appointment.


At time of appointment, bring your pet and a valid ID. The ID should include your current Irving address. If it does not, you will need to bring proof of residency (a lease agreement, water bill, etc. with your name and current address).


IAS staff will do all they can to find a new home for the pet, but cannot guarantee a pet will be adopted or transferred to a rescue or shelter partner.
