City Breaks Ground on Largest Recreation Facility Investment in Irving History
Shovels hit the dirt Friday, July 25, as city leaders, park board members and other dignitaries broke ground on the new Mustang Multi-Generational Community Center and Indoor Aquatics Facility — the largest state-of-the-art recreational investment in Irving’s history.
“We're building something for our young people and for our senior population," said Irving Mayor Rick Stopfer. "This is going to be a multipurpose facility that has just about anything and everything that you would ever want to do in one area, and we're so excited about it."
The new facility, which will be called The Mustang upon completion, is more than seven times the size of the current center. It will be constructed on the same site as the existing Mustang Recreation Center at 2223 Kinwest Parkway. The building will face LBJ Freeway (Interstate 635) and offer convenient access from I-635, Kinwest Parkway and Regent Boulevard.
"We received input and feedback from our residents, which were shared in depth with City Council,” said Irving City Manager Chris Hillman. “After many engaging conversations, we developed a plan for The Mustang. This will be a major asset to our city and a win for our residents.”
