Domestic Violence


The Domestic Violence Unit was created to specifically address the growing need for police investigators who could devote their efforts on offenses that occur inside of the family. The unit consists of five investigators and a supervisor who have been specially trained in the investigation of Family Violence Offenses.

What Qualifies as Family Violence?

The Texas Family Code defines family violence as:

  1. 71.004 "Family Violence" (1) an act by a member of a family or household (PDF)against another member of the family or household that is intended to result in physical harm, bodily injury, assault, or sexual assault or that is a threat that reasonably places the member in fear of imminent physical harm, or (2) abuse, as that term is defined bySections 261.001(1)(C), (E), and (G) (PDF)by a member of a family or household toward a child of the family or household. Offenses

The following offenses are investigated by the Domestic Violence Unit:


  1. Assault (Family)
  2. Aggravated Assault (Family)
  3. Injury / Indecency to a Child (Family)
  4. Violation of Protective Order
  5. Stalking
  6. Kidnapping (Family)
  7. False Imprisonment (Family)
  8. Harassment (Family)
  9. Deadly Conduct (Family)
  10. Retaliation (Family)
  11. Terroristic Threats (Family)
  12. Sexual Assault (Family)
  13. Interference with an Emergency Call
  14. Burglary / Criminal Trespass (Family)


After making a police report, the case will be assigned to a Domestic Violence investigator to complete the follow-up investigation.
