Lateral Entry Personnel
Those interested in becoming a part of the City of Irving Fire Department must take an entrance examination.
All lateral entry personnel shall be hired at the rank of Firefighter, regardless of prior rank held at another department. Advancement beyond the rank of Firefighter shall occur in accordance with the department’s established promotional procedures and civil service requirements.
The determination of where a newly-hired Firefighter will be placed, for purposes of beginning pay, will be made based on completed and unbroken whole years of service [other than de minimus breaks in service of sixty (60) days or less] as a certified Firefighter with any career Fire Department. Beginning pay will commence on the date the Firefighter reports to work and will be at a step commensurate with a current City of Irving Firefighter with equal years of experience, up to a maximum of three and a half (3.5) years as outlined in the City of Irving Fire Department pay chart. Thereafter, employees will progress within the pay structure according to current City of Irving Pay Plan Procedures.
All lateral hires must meet the age, testing, and eligibility requirements established in Texas Local Government Code Chapter 143, to include TCFP Certification, as well as all other applicable provisions of relevant local and state civil service statutes, rules and regulations at the time of testing.
